- Establish the Board Members and Officers
- Develop and file the Articles of Incorporation with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) ($75.00 Fee to State Corporation Commission Office of the Clerk P.O. Box 1197 Richmond, VA 23218-1197)
- Develop Bylaws – These are the rules that determine how the organization will be governed and operated.
- Apply for an EIN (Federal Tax Identification number)
- Apply for a Virginia State Tax Identification number. (Virginia Department of Taxation Registration Unit P.O. Box 1114 Richmond, VA 23218-1114)
- Apply for Exemption from State and Federal Taxes (501 (c)(3) nonprofit status) IRS Form 1023 or IRS Form 1023 EZ Both forms can be accessed at on the Internal Revenue Service website. ($600 Form 1023, $275 Form 1023 EZ)
